Paulo Coelho has estimated that over 300 million people have read his book, The Alchemist, making it one of the most widely read fictional books of a living author in our generation. Its inspirational impact on many people’s lives means they can remember when and where they first read it. One friend of mine was on a beach in the Mediterranean in 1994, another was on a subway train in NYC in 2005, and one was given a copy in a park in Australia in 2023. People have continued to discover the book as if it is new every year for the last thirty years.
For me, it was such a life-changing event I wrote a book about it called The Secret of The Alchemist and you can read my preface for free HERE.

My first memory of “The Alchemist” was receiving the book during my confirmation from my Roman godparents Max and Anna Zamboni along with my dog, a pit bull puppy named Tupac. The esoteric and mystical purple paperback cover lured me in and once there, I was transported into a new mindset of life being about the journey and not necessarily the destination.
The odd thing is I don't and it's such a wide time search, but I am sure it will come back to me, base metals to gold, the golden thread and all of that. 1990's was a long succession of books read but not kept and few lists, but it will have been then, was it in the UK then? I am certain I have read it, but could be mistaken.
